Bush vows to help Northern Ireland peace

US president George W. Bush tonight promised he would do anything he could to help the peace process in Northern Ireland.

US president George W. Bush tonight promised he would do anything he could to help the peace process in Northern Ireland.

He said: "If there is anything I can do to help bring peace in the region I will do so.

"And make no mistake about it, people shouldn't have any doubt as to where my government stands - we stay strongly side by side with Britain when it comes to decommissioning."

The US President added: "I stand ready to help in any way. I'm just a phone call away."

He was speaking at a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Tony Blair at Halton, a Royal Air Force base 48 kilometres (30 miles) northwest of London, ahead of the July 20th-22nd Group of Eight summit in Genoa, Italy.
