The Criminal Assets Bureau secured a High Court judgment yesterday for £106,249 against a man after alleging his assets derived from criminal activity. The bureau said Thomas Kavanagh, of Knocknarea Avenue, Drimnagh, Dublin, owed the amount sought in unpaid income tax and interest.
Chief Supt Fachtna Murphy, of the CAB, said in an affidavit the tax claim followed an investigation into the identification of Mr Kavanagh's assets, which derived or were suspected to derive from criminal activity.
In another affidavit, Mr Kavanagh said he was released from Portlaoise Prison on December 12th, 1993, and his father made him a gift of £5,000 to help him set up in business. He said he got another £5,000 loan to assist in buying goods.
His clothing business went well and he earned £500 a week. In addition his gambling netted him £15,500. He said he might have a liability to income tax but not the amount claimed.
Ms Justice Laffoy said Mr Kavanagh had not appealed the assessment and in those circumstances she would give judgment for the amount in favour of CAB.
