LEGISLATION BANNING the sale of a number of substances available in head shops will be discussed by the Cabinet today.
Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern will bring forward proposals making it a criminal offence to supply or sell psychoactive substances not currently prohibited under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
The European Commission has agreed to invoke the emergency procedure to allow the Government ban psychoactive substances or “legal highs”. These include synthetic cannabinoids, benzylpiperazine (BZP) derivatives, mephedrone, methylone, GBL and 1,4 BD, ketamine and tapentado.
Minister for Community Affairs Pat Carey said: “We are sending a clear message to those who are taking these products, especially young people, that these are dangerous and harmful drugs.’’
