The Irish Society for the Protection of Children (ISPCC) has called for child abuse investigations in cases where individuals are found to have child pornography.

The ISPCC said the Government needed to take the step to ensure children are adequately protected.

Gardaí yesterday said they had identified five people in the Republic whom they suspect may have been part of an international paedophile ring viewing videos of children as young as nine being sexually abused.

Although the Irish suspects have been interviewed, none has been arrested.

The ISPCC said the case "reinforces the need to ensure that the intelligence units within An Garda Síochána responsible for Internet-based crime, and in particular child abuse related Internet crime, are fully resourced.

The society repeated its call for the Garda Vetting Unit to be adequately resourced and for adequate treatment services for sex offenders.
