Call for tighter rules on minimotos

Mr Faughnan was speaking following Thursday's death of a boy in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh

Mr Faughnan was speaking following Thursday's death of a boy in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh. Robert Corry (12) died after the minimoto he was driving collided with a vehicle on a public road at Ederney near the town. A seven-year-old riding on the back of the minimoto was uninjured.

More children will be killed or injured if tougher controls are not implemented on small grade motorcycles such as minimotos, according to Conor Faughnan of the Automobile Association.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident, and have not ruled out criminal proceedings being taken.

The death has highlighted the potential dangers of the miniature motorcycles which can reach speeds of 60km/h. Legally, children under 16 are prohibited from driving them on public roads, but there are no such restrictions on private land.

"I am aware of the issue relating to minimotos, and I am very concerned about it. There has been a rash of them bought in Ireland lately," said Mr Faughnan.

"These bikes can only be used on private land, and so are not covered under the terms of the Road Traffic Act. If they are used in safe circumstances, then there is no reason to warn people off them. But they are dangerous toys, and must only be used under strict adult supervision. They must be tightly controlled."
