Labour has today called for “far stronger action” from the international community to end the Israeli attacks on Gaza.
Earlier tonight, a protest was held at the Israeli embassy in Ballsbridge over the Israeli attacks. A number of organisations were represented at the protest - including the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign.
Michael D. Higgins, Labour spokesman on foreign affairs, said the Israeli action was a “totally disproportionate response to the rocket attacks on its territory and is a clear breach of the principles of international law”.
Mr Higgins said people worldwide were horrified at the attacks and called on the Government to “join with others in not simply condemning the air strikes, but also exerting every possible pressure on the Israeli government to end the carnage”.
He urged the international community to exert pressure on all sides to bring about an immediate ceasefire and seek a lasting solution for the region.
Last night Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin repeated his condemnation of the violence and called for an immediate end to hostilities on both sides.
“The only viable solution at this stage is the restoration of a genuine and fully honoured ceasefire throughout Gaza and southern Israel,” he added.
