Support is mounting for a written declaration submitted by Glenys Kinnock (UK, PES) to press for an easing of the debt of poor Third World countries. The declaration calls on EU member states to secure agreement for definitive action, namely the one-off cancellation of unpayable debt by the year 2000, with the resources thus released targeted towards poverty eradication and productive expenditure.
It also calls on the EU to press internationally for the formulation of collective policies which would provide effective measures to prevent such high levels of debt from building up again. It has so far attracted 144 signatures.
