The Navan film cameraman killed in Saudia Arabia while working for the BBC will be buried in Greystones, Co Wicklow, after a funeral service in his home town today.

Mr Cumbers (36), was filming with BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner in a notoriously militant area of the Saudi capital, Riyadh, when they came under gun attack. Mr Gardner was seriously injured.

A statement from al-Qaeda later claimed responsibility.

Mr Cumbers wife, Loiuse Bevan - also a BBC journalist - today appealed for the media to respect the family's privacy during today's ceremonies.

A statement issued by the BBC on her behalf and that of the family said: "Simon was killed in shocking circumstances. He was only 36 years old and it has been an extremely difficult time for Louise and his family to come to terms with the appalling nature of his death.

For this reason they wish the funeral service and burial to be times of total privacy."

Mr Cumbers started his career in radio in Dublin before joining ITN in the North. He also worked around the world for Associated Press Television.

Following Mr Cumbers death, tributes were paid by colleagues who testified to his professionalism and good nature. British Foreign Secretary Mr Jack Straw who met the Co Meath man last year said: "He was a great guy in many ways, larger than life. It makes his death all the more tragic."

Mr Cumbers is survived by his parents, Brona and Bob, and siblings Stephen, Caitríona and Éimear, all of whom live in the Navan area.
