The Dublin-based firm Campbell Catering has won a multi-million euro contract to supply in-house restaurant services to the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

Under a deal agreed last Friday, Campbell - a member of the Campbell Bewley Group - will provide catering at up to 70 police stations and other PSNI offices in the North.

The announcement drew criticism from Lagan Valley MP, Mr Jeffrey Donaldson, who expressed concern about what he described as financial and security implications.

"Firstly, if this is correct, then a considerable amount of money, literally millions, is being taken out of the local economy and depriving workers here of jobs and earnings," he said.

"Secondly if a vehicle was loaded in Dublin and hijacked at the Border and a bomb placed on board by dissident republicans, it would have very serious repercussions."

Mr Sammy Wilson, a DUP representative on the North's Policing Board, said he was not aware of the awarding of the contract "but I will be asking for a full report at the next police board meeting".

Campbell Catering already employs up to 200 people in the North and has administrative offices in Belfast, as well as Dublin, Limerick and Cork.

A spokeswoman for the company said it was a matter for the PSNI to comment on Mr Donaldson's remarks rather than it.

Mr Joe Stuart, human resources spokesman with the PSNI, said it had no comment to make.

Founded in 1967 by Patrick Campbell, Campbell Catering grew from a single in-house contract to supplying sandwich lunches to 120 Dublin schools. It now employs 3,000 people in 150 locations.
