Canadian government will introduce legislation soon to crack down on drivers who are high on drugs, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said today.
The bill, to be introduced the week after next, would give police more tools to detect drivers who are using drugs as well as increase penalties.
Mr Harper was speaking at a news conference in Kitchener, Ontario, in the presence of the family of David Ryder - one of five teenagers who were killed near Ottawa in 1999 in a multi-car crash caused by a driver high on marijuana.
"Just as governments once took action on drunk driving, we must act today on drug-impaired driving," Mr Harper said.
