Campaigners are to march today to demand that cannabis be legalised in Ireland.

Organisers have promised a carnival atmosphere for the demonstration that sets off from the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin.

They are calling for an end to the criminalisation of people who smoke cannabis for "personal lifestyle and health choices".

It will be the second march of its kind organised by Legalise Cannabis Ireland (LCI) through the capital city.

"LCI is neither encouraging nor discouraging others to use cannabis," said a spokesman for the group.

"We are of the firm belief that individuals should have the freedom to make an informed, educated choice for themselves.

"The prohibition of cannabis has failed in every way. Cannabis use has never been higher and owing to the prohibition, much of the cannabis being consumed is contaminated in the name of unscrupulous profit and can be extremely hazardous to health."
