Parcels of cannabis believed to be connected to drugs found off the coast of Galway last Friday have been recovered from the sea.

The Revenue Commissioners confirmed that about two kilos of cannabis were found on Saturday evening.

On Friday, a fishing boat discovered cannabis worth approximately €85,000.

Killybegs-based trawler Progress IImade the first discovery about 60 miles west of the Aran Islands on Friday. Eight parcels of cannabis weighing about a kilo each were found.

Gardaí believe the drugs were dumped from a ship that got into difficulties off the west coast a decade ago.

A Revenue spokesman said the latest find would be examined and tested and handed over to gardaí.

The Irish Naval vessel LE Aislingwas at the scene at the weekend and was involved in a joint operation with the fishing trawler. The Customs Service cutter was also involved.
