An estimated €1.6 million worth of cannabis plants were seized by gardaí in Co Donegal yesterday.
Some 2,000 plants were part of a growing operation at a warehouse in Trummon, Laghey. One man in his 30s and another in his 40s were arrested during the planned search.
Separately, gardaí in Cork were last night continuing to question a man and woman arrested in the city yesterday morning following the discovery by Customs officers of €400,000 worth of drugs. The two were arrested at a house in the Greenmount area on Cork’s south side at about 11am after gardaí were called to the scene by Customs officers who were investigating cigarette smuggling.
This followed the detection of 8,000 cigarettes at Portlaoise mail centre and “a controlled delivery” of the cigarettes was undertaken to the Cork address.
On making the controlled delivery to the house in Greenmount, Customs officers searched the two-storey terraced house and found 40 bags, each containing an estimated 1,000 ecstasy tablets, hidden in an upstairs bedroom. Customs officers alerted gardaí, who arrested a Chinese man (31) and woman (30) and brought them to the Bridewell Garda station.
