Gardaí have seized a large quantity of cannabis resin and cannabis herb following the search of an open area in the town of Rathkeale, Co Limerick. Some 98kg of cannabis resin and 2kg of cannabis herb were discovered during the search on Saturday, which was co-ordinated by the Limerick drugs unit.

The combined value of the haul is believed to be around €750,000. Gardaí in Co Limerick said no arrests were made during Saturday's operation. However, investigations into the matter are ongoing.

This is the second significant cannabis seizure in the Limerick division in recent weeks. Last month €120,000 worth of cannabis which gardaí believe was posted from South Africa was seized at an apartment on the south side of the city.

A 30-year-old woman from Fiji and a 32-year-old man from Togo were arrested in connection with the haul but were later released. It is understood a file is to be sent to the DPP.

Woman hurt in shotgun attack

Gardaí in Limerick are satisfied that a weekend shooting in which a 45-year-old woman suffered pellet injuries to her leg was not related to a feud. The motive for the gun attack which took place at a house on the Old Cork Road on Saturday morning was not known.

A number of shots were fired from a shotgun at a house in Georgian villas at 1.10am. The 45-year-old woman suffered a minor leg injury in the shooting and was taken to the Mid Western Regional Hospital. A 45-year-old man and a 19-year-old boy who were also in the house at the time were treated for shock .

Two men dressed in black and wearing balaclavas were seen running from the scene according to gardaí who have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

The targeted family were described by sources as "decent people" who were shocked and baffled as to why their home was targeted.

Bank worker's family escape

Police in the North have confirmed they are investigating an attempt to force a bank employee to hand over money by kidnapping members of his family. Two relatives of the employee were abducted early last Thursday morning in a case of what the PSNI calls a "Tiger robbery".

However they managed to free themselves and to contact the police. No money was taken and no one in the family was injured.

The PSNI said the incident took place in the greater Belfast area, but it is understood it happened in the Moira area of Co Down, about 12 miles from the city.

Mayor launches Dublin triathlon

Dublin's 15th city triathlon, which takes place next month, was launched yesterday by Lord Mayor Cllr Paddy Bourke.

Some 850 competitors, both Irish and international will compete in the event, swimming 1,500 metres, cycling 40km and running 10km in the event on August 25th. Elite athletes are expected to finish within two hours.

Derry residents protest over drugs

Several dozen people took part in a peaceful protest outside a house in Brandywell, Derry yesterday afternoon where a quantity of drugs was found by police on Saturday night. The residents were joined by Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson.
