A car exploded killing two people and injuring at least three others in the Spanish city of San Sebastian today. The attack bore the hallmarks of Basque separatist group ETA, officials said.

The powerful explosion came just two days after the Basque government called an early election in the region.

A Socialist Party town councillor who was passing at the time appeared to have been the target of the attack, state radio said. He was slightly injured.

The two dead were workers from a nearby company.
