Larnaca - A 46-year-old Briton believed to be on the run from criminal rivals in London was killed yesterday in a car bomb explosion in this southern Cypriot port, police said.

The bomb exploded when Iraklis Ioannou Kouzsupis, who is of Greek-Cypriot origin, started his Mazda outside his holiday flat yesterday morning.

He was pronounced dead on his arrival in hospital half an hour later.

A bazooka attack last month on a cabaret in Limassol sparked a government pledge to cleanse the island of organised crime and the deployment of extra police to deal with increasing gangsterism.
