A settlement was announced yesterday in a case in which the Fine Gael MEP for Leinster, Ms Avril Doyle, was sued for €38,000 damages for personal injuries following a motor accident.

Her car had been in collision with another vehicle on the M1 while driving from Dublin Airport three years ago.

The action at the Circuit Civil Court in Dublin was taken by Ms Norma Condon (30), a commercial insurance officer, of St Columba's Rise, Swords, Co Dublin.

Ms Condon claimed Ms Doyle, of Whitestown, Wexford, had driven negligently on the M1 on March 26th, 2002, allegedly cutting across in front of Ms Condon's car to exit the motorway onto the M50.

Ms Condon alleged Ms Doyle had failed to keep a proper lookout, and had driven across the path of her car in such a manner as to have given her no reasonable opportunity to avoid a collision.

She claimed she developed pain and discomfort in her neck, right shoulder, back and chest as a result of the collision.

Movement of her cervical, thoracic and lumbar spines had been decreased and accompanied by severe pain.

She had attended her local doctor, who had diagnosed soft tissue whiplash injuries and had advised rest and medication.

She claimed she had been unable to work for a period, and had suffered from severe anxiety and stress.

Mr Roughan Banim, counsel for Ms Condon, told Judge Jacqueline Linnane yesterday that pretrial talks had been successful, and that the case had been settled. The settlement figure was not disclosed in court.
