THE FUNERAL took place at the weekend of a couple who were said to have fallen in love with the Dingle peninsula.

A bunch of heather and wild flowers, surf boards and sand from Ventry strand were among the symbols of their lives handed up before the start of the funeral Mass. The couple died in a road crash last week.

David and Claire Broughall, both in their thirties, had married in Baile an Fhirtéaraigh five years ago and made the peninsula their home. They met in Boston. David, who worked as a mechanic and panel-beater was from Kilcullen, Co Kildare, and Claire (O'Brien), a hair stylist, was from Douglas, Cork, but had been a visitor to Dingle since she was a child. They had built a house in Dingle north.

Curate Fr Eugene Kiely told the Mass the couple's deaths had cast a deep shadow over the whole community. He praised Claire's generosity in donating her organs.

The priest who officiated at their wedding, Fr Tomás Ó hIcheadha, was among the five concelebrants. They were buried in Milltown cemetery, overlooking Dingle harbour.
