Nicosia - An Egyptian court has postponed until the end of the month a court case against a feminist writer. Dr Nawal al-Saadawi is accused of apostasy from Islam, writes Michael Jansen. The lawyer raising the case, Mr Nabih alWahsh, asked the court yesterday to dissolve Dr Saadawi's 37-year marriage to her Muslim husband, who is prohibited from cohabiting with an apostate.
The complaint is based on interviews given by Dr Saadawi in which she was quoted as saying the Hajj pilgrimage has pagan roots, women should inherit the same as men, rather than half a share, and the veil is not Islamic.
She argues her remarks have been taken out of context.
