Cash-in-transit companies yesterday urged the Minister for Justice to exempt them from a range of traffic restrictions and allow them to use bus lanes to minimise the potential for attack.
An increase in Garda escorts for ATM deliveries was also sought by Siptu's security branch organiser Kevin McMahon, who warned: "Sooner or later, one of our security workers is going to get killed."
Siptu said its members remained "sitting ducks" while stopped in traffic.
Mr McMahon added that it was necessary to provide secure parking spaces for security cash vans so they could park close to the collection or delivery point.
"If our drivers can't park on double yellow lines or on the pavement for fear of getting penalty points, then they risk being exposed to greater risks if they have to park several blocks away," he said.
Minister Michael McDowell yesterday assured cash-in-transit representatives extra resources had been put in place to allow for increased Garda escorts.
