Castletown in Co Laois today was named as Ireland’s overall Best Kept Town in the 2001 Tidy Towns competition.
The winners of the competition were announced at Dublin Castle by Mr Dan Wallace, the Minister of State at the Department of the Environment and Local Government and Dr JS Faulkner, Acting Chief Executive of the Department of Environment in Northern Ireland.
The award ceremony was attended by representatives of the 15 towns around the island who were selected for the competition through the North’s Best Kept Awards and the Tidy Towns Competition in the Republic.
Kenmare in Co Kerry won the Best Kept Small Town award and Enniskillen Co Fermanagh won the Best Kept Large Town award. Castletown also won the Best Kept Village award.
