The Cathedral of Christ the King in Mullingar was reopened yesterday, the feast of Christ the King, following extensive renovations, at a Mass attended by the Bishop of Meath, Dr Michael Smith. The £1.5 million project began externally in 1994 and involved the replacement of its copper roof, cleaning and repointing of its towers, as well as the repair of its clock. In 1996 renovation began indoors. The heating system was replaced and the interior was extensively rewired, painted and decorated. A new electric organ was set up behind the altar, while a new lighting system was also put in place.
Speaking to The Irish Times last night, Father Denis Nulty, of the cathedral parish, said only £200,000 of the cost of the renovation work had yet to be raised.
