GARDAÍ IN Co Galway had last night not yet identified what caused an incident in which two French tourists lost their lives when their car plunged into a small river. The men were named last night as Laurent Roy (49) and Claude Chanterault (67).

Sgt Ailish Hynes of Clifden Garda station said Mr Chanterault was driving the car, and although the road itself had been wet, it was in good condition and the weather at the exact time was not hazardous. She added the car was also travelling at a very slow speed.

It is understood both deceased are from regions outside of Paris and were heading to Lettergesh East beach in Renvyle, Connemara, accompanied by their wives.

The four had been on holiday in Ireland since August 5th. Both men perished when their car went off the narrow winding boreen and into the river.

The car slid down an embankment and overturned in the water. The two women, who were rear-seat passengers, survived the incident.

They have been treated in hospital but have no significant physical injuries, according to gardaí.

They gave statements to investigating officers yesterday, but are "completely traumatised" following the incident, which happened at about noon on Monday.

The women said they were not sure what had happened to cause the incident.
