The funeral has taken place in Co Cavan of the US-based Irish man who drowned his two young daughters before killing himself last week.

The funeral service for engineer Thomas Reilly took place at St Mary's Catholic Church in Castle Rahen, Co. Cavan.

Police believe Mr Reilly (46), originally from Ballyjamesduff, killed his two children Megan (6) and Kelly (5) at his rented home in Montclair, New Jersey, and then took his own life.

It is understood Mr Reilly had been depressed over his marriage breakdown.

Mr Reilly, the former owner of a bar in New Jersey, was a well-known figure in the area's Irish community, known for organising charity events to raise money for New Jersey hurling teams

His coffin was adorned with a number of GAA shirts at his funeral.
