Fianna Fáil will have three representatives form the constituency in the 30th Dáil, as Ceann Comhairle Dr Rory O'Hanlon is automatically returned.
Schoolteacher Margaret Conlon secured the additional Fianna Fáil seat when she was elected on the fourth count following the surprise elimination of outgoing Independent TD Paudge Connolly. He had been elected in 2002 when he campaigned for the retention of a full range of services at Monaghan general hospital.
That campaign is still a hot political potato in Cavan-Monaghan and Connolly's supporters were devastated by sharp fall in his share of the vote, which was down by more than 50 per cent.
The fourth count also saw the elimination of Green Party contender, barrister Vincent P Martin, an independent member of Monaghan County Council. Former minister of state Brendan Smith was elected on the first count after exceeding the quota.
Sinn Féin's leader in the Dáil, Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin, was elected on the same count, having also exceeded the quota. Ó Caoláin increased his first preference vote by 10 per cent compared to the 2002 election.
Fine Gael failed in its bid to elect Joe O'Reilly, a second candidate and new running mate for outgoing TD Seymour Crawford, but Crawford was returned to the Dáil after the fourth count with the help of transfers from Connolly and Martin.
