CCTV to be installed in housing estate

Closed-circuit television cameras are to be installed in a Galway city housing estate under a new £70,000 pilot scheme

Closed-circuit television cameras are to be installed in a Galway city housing estate under a new £70,000 pilot scheme. This could herald the introduction of CCTV to residential areas throughout the State.

The scheme, announced by the Minister of State for the Environment, Mr Robert Molloy, will operate in the local authority Cairn Ard estate in Rahoon, on the west side of the city.

The management and maintenance of the system will be the responsibility of Galway Corporation, and Garda sources have confirmed that, if successful, the scheme may be extended to other residential areas. Meanwhile, Galway city centre is still on course to have a £750,000 CCTV project in place by the summer.
