Scottish champions Celtic were denied a place in the Champions League proper after going out on away goals when losing 2-0 at Swiss club FC Basel tonight.
Basel, beaten 3-1 in Glasgow two weeks ago, netted twice in the opening period at St Jakob Park to bring the scores level at 3-3 on aggregate.
Striker Christian Giminez opened the scoring after eight minutes before defender Murat Yakin doubled the lead six minutes later.
Basel, coached by former Tottenham manager Christian Gross, held on as Chris Sutton, Henrik Larsson and John Hartson all went close for Martin O'Neill's side.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United marched into the group phase after a 4-0 victory over 10-man Zeljeznicar Sarajevo at St James' Park tonight.
Kieron Dyer, who scored the only goal of the first leg, lobbed home in the 23rd minute, striker Lomana Lua Lua made it 2-0 in the 37th and second half goals from new signing Hugo Viana and skipper Alan Shearer completed the 5-0 aggregate rout.
Zeljeznicar had Sanel Jahic dismissed a few minutes before Viana's sweetly-struck shot.
Shearer, who had earlier hit the post, also missed a sitter in the closing minutes - finding the crossbar from point-blank range.
