There were cross-party congratulations for those involved in the ceremonies to commemorate the Irishmen who died in the first World War. The Labour leader, Mr Ruairi Quinn, said that having regard to the "unique and very happy" events taking place in Belgium, the Taoiseach should convey to the three heads of state the support of the Dail and the assurance that the memory of those European soldiers "who died on our behalf" would not be forgotten as it had been in the past.
Agreeing to take up the suggestion, Mr Ahern said it should be acknowledged on the record of the House that the initiative was first brought to him by Mr Paddy Harte and Mr Glen Barr. "It is an important day in historical terms." The Fine Gael leader, Mr John Bruton, said that those who died had never been adequately mourned. The Democratic Left leader, Mr Proinsias De Rossa, suggested the Dail mark the 80th anniversary of Armistice Day by having a special debate.
