Lough Derg Yacht Club in Dromineer, Co Tipperary, celebrated the victory of two world sailing champions, Peter Bayly (18), from Nenagh, and William Atkinson (13), from Moneygall, Co Offaly last weekend.

They claimed the Datalex Mirror World Champion title at Howth, Co Dublin, by winning the 10-race world championship series with 17 points to spare over runners-up, Torvar Mirsky and Justin Jacob from Australia.

Following in the footsteps of Dromineer's 1932 400 metres Olympic hurdle gold medalwinner, Mr Bob Tisdall, one of the young sailing champions, Peter, plans to compete in the 2008 Olympics.

Peter, who began sailing 11 years ago, will retire from Mirror boats and pursue a campaign in the 420 dinghy class.

Usually young sailors graduate from Mirror or Optimist fleets to 420 or Laser single handed crafts before considering future Olympic conquests.

Peter's career began in an Optimist sailing boat. From there he switched to the Mirror class when he was 15.

In the past he has won numerous local prizes, competed with the European team in the Optimist class and sailed in the Mirror World Championships in South Africa two years ago where he claimed 24th place out of a fleet of 90 boats.

Preparations for Peter's world championship victory have taken place over the past five years.

He has practised sailing in the summer at Lough Derg Yacht Club and trained in Dublin during the winter. Although he was at the helm for the sailing competition, he complemented his crew and cousin, William. William, from Moneygall, Co Offaly, said it was great experience being crew for his 18-year-old cousin.

Meanwhile mentors at the club say the world title win shows the success of its junior coaching programme which has been running for the past 16 years. "It is an inspiration to other kids on the course that they, too, can be successful," the Commodore of Lough Derg Yacht Club, Mr James O'Donoghue, said.

This week saw the Lough Derg Yacht Club's annual regatta attracting over 400 people. Next week the club will host the Irish Optimist championships.
