Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez's ruling Socialist Party won a majority in parliament, but the opposition surpassed the crucial one third of seats, electoral authorities said today.
Mr Chavez said he won a "solid victory" in congressional elections, according to a message posted on his Twitter account.
"We've obtained a solid victory, sufficient to continue deepening Bolivarian and democratic socialism," Mr Chavez said in a message on his Twitter account.
"We must continue strengthening the revolution. Another victory for the people."
