Singapore - A Singapore politician was jailed for 12 days and barred from running for parliament for five years after a court found him guilty yesterday of speaking in public without a permit for a second time. Opposition politician Mr Chee Soon Juan chose the prison sentence instead of a £1,000 fine, which disqualifies him, the leader of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), from standing for parliament for five years.
In his final argument, Mr Chee told the court: "I am not on trial for a crime. I am in a political struggle."
