ChevronTexaco Corp said today that 88 people working on one of its oil rigs in Nigeria had been taken hostage by a group wishing to obtain jobs on the same rig.

Company spokesman Mr Fred Gorell said negotiators convinced the kidnappers to release 45 of the 88 hostages later in the day.

The workers are largely contract employees, working for Loyd Nobel.

Noting that none of the hostages had been hurt, Mr Gorell also said negotiators will continue talks with the kidnappers tomorrow in hopes of securing the release of all the hostages.
