THE CHIEF Justice, Mr Justice John Murray, has been appointed a member of a newly established panel which will advise the Council of Europe regarding judicial appointments to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), writes Carol Coulter.
The Council of Europe, founded in 1949, has 47 member states and is distinct from the EU.
As well as the ECHR, which enforces the European Convention on Human Rights, it has a parliamentary assembly composed of members of national parliaments, and a council of ministers, composed by the foreign ministers of the member states.
