Newcastle - Two men working in council children's homes in northern England have been suspended after allegations into abuse dating back to the 1960s. Allegations about other home workers have also emerged during new inquiries by Northumbria Police but they are either dead or retired and no longer working with children. One of the men suspended is employed by Newcastle City Council and the other by Northumberland County Council, but they have also worked for other authorities. The investigation stemmed from an abuse allegation by a 1970s resident of a Newcastle council home but subsequent inquiries resulted in more complaints being made. Allegations now spread between the 1960s and 1980s, police told a news conference.
