Beijing - A legendary Chinese general hailed as a hero by Chinese communists and jailed for decades by the Nationalist Party leadership has died at the age of 101 in the US, Chinese state media reported yesterday.

Chang Hsue-liang died at a hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he had lived since 1995 after spending decades in Taiwan under house arrest.

In 1936, when a general in the Nationalist army, Chang arrested his boss Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek and forced him into talks with the Communist Party (CCP).
