Writing in the Church of Ire- land Ordination Newsletter 2001, the central director of ordinands, Canon Cecil Hyland, notes it is encouraging that the number of candidates for ordination has remained reasonably constant. However, he warns it is especially important at present to encourage and foster vocations for, due to the foot-and-mouth crisis, the annual Vocations Conference has to be cancelled and only one Selection Conference will be held this year.
