The Minister for Transport, Mr Brennan, has told a Fianna Fáil activist he will consider appointing him to the board of Shannon Airport if he separates the airport from Aer Rianta.
The individual, believed to be from Co Clare, nominated himself for a directorship in a letter to Mr Brennan.
His first sentence said "I have been a member of Fianna Fáil", but the Department of Transport blacked out the remaining details when releasing the letter under the Freedom of Information Act.
He was told Mr Brennan "will keep your name in mind pending the outcome of the current review".
Mr Brennan is expected to bring plans to the Government in the next month proposing the break-up of Aer Rianta, the State company that operates the airports at Dublin, Shannon and Cork.
His spokesman said he received "dozens" of similar nominations, from various interests, for places on various boards.
While trade unions are opposed to Mr Brennan's plans, the correspondence suggests individuals within Fianna Fáil were jockeying for positions on the airports' boards more than half a year ago.
The Department concealed the individual's identity and blacked out his land-line and mobile phone numbers and his postal and e-mail addresses.
Other sections of the letter, titled "options for operation of Shannon", were also blacked out. The writer claimed to be "fully aware of the importance of the decision to be made in the near future for Shannon and mid-west region.
"In the event of you opting for the setting up of a regional management board under Aer Rianta, I feel that I would have useful contributions to make on an ongoing basis to the workings of the board."
The writer said he was part of a deputation which met Mr Brennan last July 24th.
