A man who was given a three-year suspended sentence for rape has been sent to prison for breaching the terms of his sentence.
Adam Keane (20), a bricklayer from Barnageeha, Daragh, Co Clare, was convicted in February by a 10 to two majority of raping Mary Shannon from Daragh (33) in a house in a Co Clare town on May 30th, 2005.
He received a three-year suspended sentence from Mr Justice Paul Carney on March 12th.
At the time Mr Justice Carney noted that Keane had said the rape was out of character for him and that he came from a respectable home.
However, today Mr Justice Carney lifted the suspended sentence he imposed on Keane and sent him to prison arising out of breach of his bond.
Mr Justice Carney said he was satisfied Carney made a triumphal gesture by flicking a cigarette at Ms Shannon on a train after the trial.
This evening the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre said they welcomed the decision by Justice Carney in relation to the Mary Shannon Case.
Ellen O'Malley-Dunlop, Chief Executive of DRCC said "We are very pleased for Mary Shannon and her family.
"We are sorry that she had to suffer so much, but we hope that this judgement will enable her to begin the process of healing and that she will be able to get on with the rest of her life," she said.
