The businessman behind plans to construct a €200 million windfarm in west Clare has admitted that may be five or six years before the windfarm becomes operational.

Director of West Clare Renewable Energy, Padraig Howard, said the project may not be operational until then unless Government reform of how connections to the national grid are allocated.

Earlier this year, the company lodged plans for the 31 turbine 410-foot high windfarm on 3,000 acres of upland around Mount Callan over the Atlantic, that will produce sufficient energy to power 59,000 homes.

During its 20-year operational phase, the windfarm is to provide a wind-fall of €15.5 million to 30 farm families in the area.
