They describe themselves as the oldest boy band in Ireland and with a cumulative age of 310, not many bands will dispute the claim of Dublin's four-man Bolton Street Band.

Now they are looking for a "mature" drummer to join their group and help them record a charity album for the Christmas market.

The current line-up consists of saxophone, keyboard, harmonica and spoons but the band recently received a donation of a full drum kit so they now need a drummer to complete their line-up.

"Prospective drummers should be able to fit in with existing mature band members and have experience of a wide range of musical influences," said Dermot Kirwan of the Friends of the Elderly group which is promoting the band.

He said the Bolton Street Band planned to record a selection of Abba, Bee Gees and 80s classics for the Christmas market, with all proceeds going to Friends of the Elderly Wednesday Club.

The band's repertoire includes an unlikely mix of songs such as We are the Championsby Queen, and Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stickby Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Recording facilities have already been agreed for the Christmas album.

"We are really serious about getting on the playlist for the Christmas market," Mr Kirwan said. "Our aim is to have a hit single in the charts for the Christmas market and to play live on the Pat Kenny or Ryan Tubridy show."

The group has an impressive pedigree. Its saxophonist, Seán McGuinness (89), played with stars such as Vera Lynn, Josef Locke, the Joe Loss Orchestra and Victor Sylvester.

Keyboard player Paddy Connolly (69) has been playing professionally since he was 18-years-old and was resident musician in Butlins for 14 years and Portmarnock Country Club for 10 years.

Singer and harmonica player Des Kane (82) sang with the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society among others and played The Soldier's Songon his harmonica within the walls of Stormont. Willie Shanks (70) plays the bodhrán and spoons.
