A three-minute video will be included in evidence in the third appeal case of Pte Lee Clegg, which opens in Belfast today. The video is a virtual reconstruction of the controversial shooting on September 30th, 1990, when soldiers fired 19 bullets into a stolen car after it crashed through a road-block in west Belfast. The driver, Martin Peake (17), was shot dead, and Karen Reilly (18), a backseat passenger, was fatally wounded.Clegg (30) was convicted of murdering Ms Reilly and sentenced to life imprisonment. He lost two appeals, but was released after serving just over two years. He is now back with his regiment. The case was referred back to the Northern Ireland Court of Appeal by the former Northern secretary Sir Patrick Mayhew after he was presented with new forensic evidence by Clegg's new solicitors.Legal adviser Simon McKay, of solicitors Chadwick Lawrence, Wakefield, Yorkshire, said last night that the video would be used in evidence to be given by Dr Graham Renshaw, a ballistics expert.Other expert witnesses who will be called on Clegg's behalf include Scottish pathologist Dr Iain West, and two Americans - Dr Martin Fackler, whose speciality is the study of gunshot wounds, and Mr Paul Dougherty, an authority on firearms. The court will also hear evidence on the results of firing tests carried out by another American ballistics expert, Mr Lucien C. Hagg, from Arizona.Whether the evidence is admissible will be decided by the appeal judges, the Lord Chief Justice, Sir Robert Carswell, and Lord Justices MacDermott and Nicholson.Clegg himself is not expected to attend the hearing, which could last for two weeks. His legal team will be led by Mr Anthony Scrivener QC.
