Nicosia - The Cyprus President, Mr Glafkos Clerides said yesterday his government would not accept any
solution to the conflict on the divided eastern Mediterranean island that jeopardised its independence.
"We will not accept just any solution," Mr Clerides, a Greek Cypriot, said at a service commemorating the 20th anniversary of the death of Archbishop Makarios, who became the first president of the independent Republic of Cyprus in 1960.
"We know that the solution to the Cyprus problem will be a compromise but we will not accept a compromise that threatens the independence and territorial integrity of Cyprus," Mr Clerides said.
He is due to meet Mr Rauf Denktash, the Turkish-Cypriot leader, in Montreux, Switzerland, on August 11th, their second round of all-encompassing talks under the latest UN effort to end the conflict. - (AFP)
