Former US president Bill Clinton's stepfather died yesterday at his home in Hot Springs, Arkansas after a lengthy illness at the age of 91.

Richard Kelley's death was confirmed by Skip Rutherford, dean of the Clinton School of Public Service at Little Rock.

"Dick was a gregarious, fun and inspiring individual," Mr Rutherford said. "He frequently represented the president, and always did so with grace and class."

Mr Kelley, a retired businessman, was the fourth husband of Mr Clinton's mother, Virginia Clinton Kelley, who died in 1994.
