A traditional working men's club infiltrated by an "unsavoury" element was fined £120 yesterday for after-hours drinking.

Gardai who inspected the United Working Men's Club on Emmet Road, Inchicore, Dublin, found people drinking on the premises up to two hours after closing time, Dublin District Court heard.

Since the four incidents in October, 1998, and January, 1999, a new committee had been put in place and there had been "dramatic improvements" in the running of the club, Judge Timothy Lucey was told.

The court heard previously that problems had arisen because "unsavoury" individuals got involved in the club and this led to a situation where it was difficult to know who were members and who were not.

The court heard the four charges before the court were just "a token" compared to the number of after-hours inspections that had taken place.

Sgt Peter Brady said he inspected the club once before Christmas and once afterwards and there had been "dramatic improvements from what had been there".

Judge Timothy Lucey imposed fines totalling £120 for the four breaches.
