England suffered an embarrassing 3-1 defeat to Australia in a friendly at Upton Park tonight.

Australia stunned the home fans after 15 minutes when former West Ham United midfielder Stan Lazaridis swung in a free kick and defender Popovic headed past David James from just five metres out.

Paul Scholes had a 20th minute reply ruled out for what appeared to be a push by striker James Beattie but it was a rare England foray and Australia went close on three more occasions in the first half.

The pressure paid off four minutes before the break when Leeds United midfielder Kewell capped a superb personal first half by dispossessing Rio Ferdinand before calmly rounding James to score the second.

Sven Goran-Eriksson changed the entire England team for the second half and among the new boys was Everton's 17-year-old striker Wayne Rooney, who became his country's youngest-ever player.

However, it was two other debutants who combined for England's goal as Arsenal striker Francis Jeffers flashed in a header from a Jermaine Jenas cross in the 70th minute as the replacements showed more verve than their "first choice" predecessors.

Australia though wrapped up their first win in six games against England six minutes from time when John Aloisi fed Feyenoord midfielder Emerton to tap in the third.

  • Mark Hughes' Wales team became the first in the country's history to go nine games unbeaten after they drew 2-2 with Bosnia-Herzegovina at the Millennium Stadium.

But Wales made hard work of it as they came from behind twice with Robert Earnshaw equalising in the first half and John Hartson levelling late in the second.

Bosnia made the brighter start and took the lead through Galatasary striker Elvir Baljic after five minutes, but Earnshaw equalised two minutes later, firing home from 18 metres.

In a dull second half the Bosnians again took the lead after 64 minutes through Sergej Barbarez but with just 14 minutes remaining Hartson popped up to salvage a draw.

  • Liverpool captain Sami Hyypia scored the only goal of the game as Finland beat Northern Ireland 1-0 at Windsor Park.
