Hundreds of pupils were evacuated from their school in Co Down today when workmen unearthed what an unexploded second World War mortar bomb in the grounds.
The device was found at Bangor Academy in Bangor forcing the school to be cleared and several surrounding town centre streets to be closed off.
The alert ended just before the scheduled end of school when British army bomb disposal officers made the device safe.
The school moved to a new multimillion-pound building earlier this year and workmen are still digging in the grounds as they put the finishing touches to it.
Two days ago a second World War grenade was removed from a private collection in a house a few miles away in Newtownards over fears it could still explode.
The device was taken from the house by army bomb disposal experts. A number of deactivated weapons were also recovered from property on Saratoga Avenue.
