Coast guard searches for missing ferry passenger

The Irish Coast Guard has been assisting its Welsh counterpart in searching for a lorry driver who disappeared from a ferry.

Staff on the Mostyn to Dublin ferry reported the man missing after he failed to collect his vehicle when the P&O vessel arrived in Dublin.

A coast guard helicopter flew to Holyhead at 7.55 a.m. and followed the route of the ferry back to Dublin. It found no sign of the man. The coast guard are awaiting garda advice before deciding to send the Helicopter out again.

A spokeswoman for Holyhead Coastguard said lifeboats were searching the sea off the coast of Llandudno as well as around the Isle of Anglesey.

She said: "The ferry left Mostyn docks just after 9.30 p.m. last night and arrived at Dublin at around 5 a.m.

"Staff discovered a lorry driver was missing after he failed to pick up his vehicle.

"The vessel was searched and there was no sign of the missing man.

"We were contacted and have three lifeboats plus a helicopter currently searching off the coast of north Wales."

The coastguard said it had no details of the man's identity.
