WITH the wines of South Africa currently winning awards all around them, what about a chance to sample the foods designed to accompany them? From March 21st to 23rd the K Club in Straffan, Co Kildare, is running a Taste of South Africa weekend, supervised by Christian Campbell, executive chef to the Plettenberg group.
Mr Campbell and the K Club's Michel Flamme will be conjuring up delights such as traditional Cape bisque enriched with a tower of smoked snoek (that isn't a typo snoek is what it is, and I don't know what it is either), medallions of springbok with creamy mealle meal; pan fried redfish with a confit of onion; carpaccio of ostrich with a coriander pesto, and koeksisters served with an iced coconut parfait.
The specialities will feature each evening in the Byerley Turk restaurant, where dinner from the table d'hote menu costs £39. Details of the weekend are available from Mary Farrelly at (01) 627 3333.
