Former Olympic 1500 metres champion Sebastian Coe has been asked by the FA to help in their review of anti-doping procedures, which has been implemented since Ferdinand's case emerged.
The Manchester United and England defender missed a routine drugs test on September 23 and will face an FA disciplinary committee later this week in Bolton.
Lord Coe today stated that he believed athletics can point a way forward to the FA in terms of getting the anti-doping message across to competitors.
The 47-year-old said: "I think it's sensible that sports can learn from each other. "In athletics we've been dealing with this on and off for the last 25 to 30 years, and in a high-profile way for the last 10 or 15 years. I think it's a sensible move from the FA.
"I think what I can bring to it is a distant eye from another sport that had to deal with some of the high-profile issues. "It's a complicated process - it's not just about protocol and procedures because the second there is a millimetre of a loophole then the lawyers will pick it apart straight away.
