The third round of the English and Scottish FA Cups was hit hard by the cold weather today with more than a dozen games postponed and many more facing pitch inspections tomorrow.

Nine FA Cup matches have been called off, four of them involving premier league teams - Wimbledon v Middlesbrough, Rotherham v Southampton, Coventry City v Tottenham Hotspur and Stockport v Bolton Wanderers.

Ipswich Town's visit to minor league Dagenham & Redbridge is facing a morning inspection but officials of the Conference club said they were confident it would go ahead.

"The club have hired nine big heaters to thaw the pitch out. They will be on all night," the club said on its website.

In Scotland, Celtic's game against Alloa at Falkirk's Brockville ground, Rangers's trip to Berwick and Livingston's game at Albion were among the postponements.

"The players' safety is of paramount importance," said Rangers manager Alex McLeish.
